Spring break means it's time to let loose and to travel. But planning a trip can be pretty pricey this time of year, which could be enough to make you consider just staying home. Fortunately, one travel expert is sharing insider knowledge about how to save on your spring break vacay.

Nicky Kelvin, editor-at-large for The Points Guy travel site recommends these destination dupes of nearby locations that come with lower price tags and just as many impressive activities and locations.

  • Monterey, California - If you’re considering a trip to northern California, Kelvin suggests skipping San Francisco and heading about 120 miles south to Monterey Bay instead. “It’s about two hours south and you’ll find hotel rooms are up to $150 cheaper per night,” he says. Visitors to the coastal city can take in nearby sights like Big Sur and the 17-mile drive that follows the coastline of the Monterey Peninsula, featuring famous golf courses like Pebble Beach Golf Links and Spyglass Hill.
  • Rattlesnake Canyon, Colorado - Kelvin says outdoor enthusiasts who love Utah and Arches National Park should consider the lesser-known Rattlesnake Canyon. It’s a few hours outside of Denver, near the Utah-Colorado border, and it’s home to a 120-thousand-acre conservation area with the “second biggest concentration of arches in the U.S.” Visitors can take in the natural wonders in a quick car ride or a 15-mile round-trip hike.
  • St. Petersburg, Florida - South Beach isn’t the only hot spring break destination in the Sunshine State. According to the travel expert, St. Petersburg is better than Miami for those looking to save. Kelvin says you can find cheap flights to Tampa and the drive is less than half an hour to get to St. Pete, home to the Salvador Dali Museum and Fort De Soto Park.

So does this help with your spring break budget?
