America's Favorite Pizza, Is It One Of Yours?

Americans love our pizza, which is probably why October is National Pizza Month, and a new survey how we like it best and how much we'll eat (easy answer...all of it!!)

According to the poll of 5-thousand U.S. adults, the average person can eat five slices of pizza in a single setting and typically eats pizza three times in a month. That adds up to 180 slices a year, or enough to stuff a full-size suitcase. I'll take that challenge

So here are the stats:

  • More Americans prefer frozen, ready-to-bake-at-home pizza (30%), than eating fresh pizza in a restaurant (26%) or delivery pizza (16%).
  • About three-quarters (74%) say they’d be satisfied eating pizza for any meal of the day and 69% actually like eating it for breakfast.
  • And 25% love pizza so much, they’d even serve it at their wedding.
  • Everyone has their own idea of what makes the best pizza, but according to the survey, the country’s “perfect” pizza is circular in shape (65%), thick crust (32%), has tomato sauce (61%) and is topped with mozzarella (59%), pepperoni (51%), sausage (42%), mushrooms (37%) and parmesan (37%).
  • People also like their pie to come with parmesan (41%), red pepper flakes (32%), pepper (31%) or ranch (30%) on the side.
  • Respondents say the worst toppings are avocado (39%), mac and cheese (36%), eggplant (36%), pineapple (27%) and fried chicken (26%).
  • When it comes to leftover pizza, 35% prefer reheating it in the microwave, 30% reheat in the oven, while 18% like to eat it cold.

The poll also identifies each state’s ideal pizza, here are some highlights (check out all 50 here):

  • California = circle shape, thick crust, tomato sauce, topped with mozzarella, ricotta, parmesan, pepperoni, salt
  • Maryland = circle shape, thick crust, tomato sauce, topped with mozzarella, mushrooms, sausage, pepperoni, red pepper flakes
  • New York = square shape, thick crust, tomato sauce, topped with mozzarella, sausage, pepperoni, pepper
