Cleveland Browns defensive end Lonnie Phelps was reportedly arrested for DUI and property damage in Key West, Florida, after crashing his SUV into a restaurant and refusing to cooperate with police, according to an incident report obtained by TMZ Sports on Thursday (June 20).
The incident reportedly took place outside the Red Shoe Island Bistro at around 8:47 p.m. local time. The Key West Police Department was dispatched to the scene in reference to a traffic crash and observed a black Hyundai wedged into the side of the restaurant upon arrival.
Phelps, 23, and his girlfriend were identified to responding officers by witnesses at the scene, however, neither was cooperative when police attempted to question them, according to the incident report.
Phelps was reported to have consistently talked over and disobeyed orders from officers during questioning while showing signs of impairment. The defensive end voluntarily took field sobriety tests but became combative and complained about how they were administered before being placed in custody, at which point he reportedly continued complaining.
"Phelps talked about how thirsty he was, how he did not know what I was going to do to him because females are the worst, asked me not to kill him, asked me how long it takes to bail out, how long I was the detective and informed me I was Russian," an officer wrote in the report.
Police said Phelps refused to take a breathalyzer and urinated on himself while sitting in a chair the station. The former University of Kansas standout signed with the Browns as an undrafted free agent last offseason but didn't appear in any games during the 2023 NFL season.
