Conor McGregor's next fight could be in Arlington now that Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is on board.
Last week, the UFC fighter tweeted that he accepted a fight against former lightweight champion Dustin Poirier for January 23. McGregor name dropped Jones because he wants the match be hosted at AT&T Stadium since "the stadium can hold our crowd."
McGregor will likely get his match since Jones said during a radio interview that he's open to the idea.
“I’m a real admirer of (McGregor). He’s one of the neatest individuals I think I’ve met, period. He has an unbelievable - to be as physical as he is - he has an unbelievable personality and charisma. He’s special. It would be quite a day for AT&T Stadium to have him," Jones said on 105.3 The Fan on Friday.
AT&T Stadium has the space for it.
Unlike other arenas and stadiums that have been closed to sports fans since the start of the pandemic, AT&T Stadium has been hosting on average of 24,000 fans per game during the last three Cowboys home games. That's just under 25% of the stadium's 80,000 capacity.
The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation is accepting applications for combative sporting events that would cap a venue's capacity at 50%, Fox Business reported. So AT&T Stadium could have upwards of 40,000 people if Jones goes that route.
With the match proposed to happen next year, it's impossible to predict what the stadium situation will be under COVID-19 regulations. More importantly, there's only a spoken agreement between McGregor and Poirer. ESPN reported that the fight isn't official yet since no about agreement has been signed.
