This Year’s Grammy Snubs Included Ed Sheeran, But Not Drake

This year’s Grammy nominees have been announced, and Jay-Z has more than anyone with eight. Kendrick Lamar is next with seven, followed by Bruno Mars with six, and Childish Gambino, Khalid, producer No I.D., and SZA, all with five apiece.

While Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar, Bruno Mars, and Childish Gambino were showered with Grammy nominations, but not everyone got the love some expected them to get.

Ed Sheeran was one of the bigger snubs. He was supposed to be a big player in the major categories, but his album “Divide” and song “Shape of You” had to settle for two nominations in the pop categories.

Lady Gaga also didn’t get anything outside the pop categories.

Some people also thought Metallica had a shot to crash the Album of the Year category, but they only got a single nod for Best Rock Song.

For the first time in three years, country music was shut out in the top categories, leaving out albums like Miranda Lambert’s”The Weight of These Wings.”

As for surprises, Bernie Sanders was nominated for Best Spoken Word Album for “Our Revolution: A Future to Believe In”. He’s up against Bruce Springsteen, Carrie Fisher, Neil deGrasse Tyson, and songwriter Shelly Peiken.

There won’t be an #OscarsSoWhite-like controversy at the Grammys, because for the second straight year, the five most-nominated artists are black.

Also for the FIRST time in Grammy history, no white men are nominated for Album of the Year. Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar, Bruno Mars, Childish Gambino, and Lorde are up for the award.

There also weren’t any white men nominated in 1999, when the category was packed with only women…Lauryn Hill, Madonna, Sheryl Crow, Shania Twain, and Garbage. However, while Garbage is fronted by Shirley Manson, the band also features three white guys.

There’s an 80% chance that a black artist WINS Album of the Year, something that’s only happened 10 times in Grammy history. However, if Lorde wins, it wouldn’t be surprising, considering the last five winners…

In 2012, Adele’s “21” won over Bruno Mars and Rihanna, but that’s such a no-brainer because that album out-sold EVERYTHING.

Naturally, there’s a lot of talk about race, but perhaps more interestingly, the genres of rock and pop are taking a backseat to rap and R&B in the top categories.

Only three times in history have TWO rap albums been up for Album of the Year.

This year, Childish Gambino’s surprise nomination, alongside Jay-Z, Bruno Mars, and Kendrick Lamar means that there are FOUR urban, R&B, or hip-hop Album of the Year nominees for the first time ever.

By the way, you can look for the nominees to get whiter next year when Taylor Swift returns. This year’s awards include albums released from October of LAST year, up through September of this year.

So that means the latest albums by Lady Gaga, Metallica, and The Weeknd all qualified, even though they came out at the end of last year, while Taylor, and others like Pink, Maroon 5, and Sam Smith will have to wait until next year.

CBS will air “The 60th Annual Grammy Awards” live on January 28th.
